During Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at SDCC, we learned we’ll be getting two Avengers movies. Now we know who’ll be directing one of them.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Shang-Chi filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton will be helming, the first of the superhero team-ups, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
This is wonderful news and can only be seen as Kevin Feige’s way of thanking Cretton for his fantastic job with the Sam Liu-led flick.

As Legend of the Ten Rings was the first post-pandemic Marvel movie to hit theatres and went on to gross $432 million and is highly regarded as a bright point in the current Phase 4.
It’ll mark a busy time for the director after signing an overall deal with the studio. He’s currently working on a Shang-Chi sequel and is developing a live-action Wonder Man series with Andrew Guest, who’s been a writer-producer on shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community.
However, they’ll be a lot of pressure on him as this will be the first Avengers tentpole since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which nearly grossed $2.8 billion worldwide and wrapped up The Infinity Saga.
Not only that, The Kang Dynasty will feature a whole new team of Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes.

Despite not coming out until May 2, 2025, it won’t be surprising if we hear that the Short Term 12 director will only be able to produce Shang-Chi’s next adventure as working on an Avengers movie would be too much for one person’s plate.
Unless we learn at D23 in September that Shang-Chi 2 will be one of the films taking up one of the free eight passes in Phase 6, and production will begin next year with Avengers 5 starting filming in 2024.
Currently, we have no idea who will be writing Kang Dynasty. Johnathan Majors will continue playing the titled villain, having been introduced in Loki and will be re-introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, slated for a February 17, 2023 release.
I say re-introduced because Majors revealed during Comic-Con that the version of Kang in Ant-Man will differ from the one in Loki.

Finally, the follow-up to The Kang Dynasty, Avengers: Secret Wars (currently set for November 7, 2025 release) hasn’t got a director attached – something I’m sure Marvel chief Feige will keep under wraps until D23.
