Sofia Boutella To Lead Zack Snyder’s Sci-Fi Epic Rebel Moon For Netflix

After releasing both Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves successfully on Netflix and signing an overall deal at the streamer, Zack Snyder has moved fasted to get the ball rolling on this latest project, Rebel Moon bringing Sofia Boutella to star.

Deadline revealed the Justice League director has been meeting talent for months before cutting it down to a small group of actresses recently. This included the Kingsman star Boutella, who Snyder moved in fast to cast her as the lead wowing him in auditions.

The sci-fi epic is the first official film from Zack and Deborah Snyder’s production company, The Stone Quarry since signing the first-look deal with the studio.

The film follows a young woman with a mysterious past as she must seek out warriors from neighbouring planets to help protect her peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy against the armies of the tyrannical Regent Ballsarius.

As well as directing, Snyder co-wrote the film with Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) and Kurt Johnstad (300) and it’s based on an original idea by Snyder and Johnstad.

You may not know classic samurai films inspired this project and originally began as a pitch Snyder was going to present to Lucasfilm as a Star Wars movie, so I fully expect it will be heavy on action and incredible stunts and choreography. Getting someone of the Atomic Blonde star Boutella talents and background is a cracking move by Snyder.

I won’t be surprised if we begin to hear more news of castings over the coming weeks with the major role being the villain Ballsarius, who I’m sure the filmmaker has a top star in mind.

Having recently produced Army and its spinoff Thieves, The Stone Quarry is also producing the anime spinoff Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and the Norse mythology series, Twilight of the Gods.
