It’s safe to say Warner Bros and DC are likely what they’re seeing from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, especially with Peacemaker as they’ve greenlit an original eight-episode series on HBO Max for said character.
As per the press release, the series will explore the origins of the character, the master of weapons from The Suicide Squad in what they’re describing as an action-adventure-comedy with John Cena reprising the role.

Specific details about Peacemaker will be kept under wraps until we see the superhero film next summer. Still, it’ll explore a man who believes in peace at any cost – no matter how many people he kills to achieve it.
Gunn will write (and at this point as penned a couple of drafts of) all eight episodes of Peacemaker and will director multiple episodes (depending on how his schedule is looking with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3) including the first as they hope to begin production early 2021.
Meanwhile, the filmmaker and The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran will be executive producers, and in a surprising piece of news, Cena is co-executive producer.
Speaking about the project, Gunn said “Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag.

“I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series” he added.
Cena, finally free from the Firefly Fun House, stated, “I have said before that it has been a tremendous honour and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie.
“I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him for Peacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this.”
After the announcement, Gunn took a couple of question on Twitter regarding the series and stated this show doesn’t affect the outcome of Peacemaker’s life in The Suicide Squad, so why is was the press release using the word “origin” in its description.
As someone who wasn’t interested in this movie or Gunn helming it, the footage from DC FanDome and this news does interest me in Cena’s performance specifically and this D-list character.
