Best Video Games Movies

This week sees the release of a new animated movie from Warner Bros Home Entertainment and for the first time, it’s not a DC Comics, Hanna-Barbera or LEGO property as Mortal Kombat is getting the animated treatments.

It’s surprising it took this long, considering this is a property that fits perfectly with the medium considering the graphic violence.

With Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge coming out on digital download tomorrow (Tuesday 14th) and DVD/ Blu-Ray and 4K UHD on April 27th. Here’s a list of some decent video game adaptations.

Disclaimer – This was a hard list to do, considering that even getting a decent video game movie is hard to come by.

Tomb Raider – 2018

This movie was a mixed bag of a lot of people. However, I would argue that Norwegian Roar Uthaug’s 2018 reboot is the best video game movies ever made and a good movie overall.

The film follows the same footsteps of the fantastic 2013 rebooted game, Alicia Vikander is brilliant as Lara Croft and handles the action scenes, Junkie XL’s score is terrific.

It has a Batman Begins vibe as this is the origin of the legend.

100% worth checking out as it’s currently on Netflix and a sequel is planned with the great British director Ben Wheatley (please check out one of my favourite movies Free Fire on Amazon Prime) helming.

Mortal Kombat – 1995

The OG Mortal Kombat was released 25 years ago and is still considered a good video game movie and let’s be clear it is utter crap.

It took until Tomb Raider in 2018 to knock it off, that’s how bad it’s been.

Now, don’t get me wrong, people LOVE this movie it is the ultimate guilty pleasure with one of the best theme music ever.

Sonic The Hedgehog – 2020

The most recent entry was released in February and surprisingly Sonic The Hedgehog (even after those bad trailers) was a smash hit!

It seemed to hit a lot of target audiences with it aimed at kids and adults can enjoy seeing Jim Carrey go full-on 90s Jim Carrey.

Detective Pikachu – 2019

This movie was a hit and miss as critics, for the most part, loved it. However, unless you had kids or a Pokemon fan, it just didn’t hit the box office as it should’ve.

There is a lot to like about this movie. Justice Smith does a wonderful job leading the film, and Ryan Reynolds is excellent playing himself but as Pikachu. It’s a great watch now we’re correctly stuck indoors with nothing to do.

Also, I’ll love this movie forever because of one character, Psyduck.

Honourable Mention

Rampage – 2018

Rampage is not a timeless movie. It is an incredibly massively entertaining summer action movie of Dwayne Johnson and his CG giant ape.

No brain cells will be hurt, and you will have the biggest smile.

Additionally, has one of the best lines ever in the form of Jeffery Dean Morgan’s Agent Harvey Russell saying “You see, when science shits the bed, I’m the guy they call to change the sheets.”

Be sure to check out Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge this week. Watch the red band trailer below.
