Joker Leads The BAFTA Nominations

BAFTA have announced their nominations for this year’s awards with Joker leading the way with 11 including Best Film, Best Actor and Best Director.

Bringing up the rear are Netflix’s The Irishman and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood from Sony with 10 nominations.

While I don’t see all three of these films winning all categories nomination in, but I do see a real possibility, following their Golden Globes win and it’s a British war film, 1917 doing brilliantly in the nine categories it’s nominated.

There were a couple of happy surprises with Jessie Buckley deservedly getting in the Best Actress category for her superb performance in Wild Rose. Meanwhile, in the Best Animation race, there are nominations for Netflix’s Christmas Klaus and I’m personally happy to see A Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon is there.

Additionally, Parasite deservedly in the Best Film race and Booksmart getting an Original Screenplay nom.

On the other hand, there were some other questionable nominations with the fact there isn’t a person of colour nominated in any of the acting categories and this is highlighted by Margot Robbie having two Best Supporting Actress noms for Bombshell and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

There were two nominations for Scarlett Johansson, one in Best Actress for Marriage Story and the other in Best Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit.

It’s a shame because I don’t see ScarJo’s performance any better than say Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers and then you’ve got Ana de Armas who was fantastic in Knives Out.

Finally, you could make a real case for Awkwafina and Cynthia Erivo for their cracking performances in The Farewell and Harriet to be in the Best Actress race, but the question is who would you take out.

Apart from those, I think BAFTA has done a spot-on job and it’s great to see casting getting the recognition it deserves.

Here’s the full list of nominees and in bold will be ones I believe will win.
