Colin Farrell Returning As The Penguin For HBO Max The Batman Spinoff Series

Matt Reeves continues to expand his Batman world as it was announced last night Colin Farrell is reprising his role as The Penguin for an upcoming HBO Max series on the character.

Variety revealed that Farrell would also be executive producing the series that will focus on The Penguin’s rise to power in the Gotham Underworld. We’ll get our first full look at the Irishman as Oswald Cobblepot when the Robert Pattinson led The Batman is released on March 4.

The series has been in development for a while and was first reported back in September, but at the time, Farrell wasn’t officially attached. This would’ve likely have been a contact and calendar issue that has been resolved.

Lauren LeFranc is attached as writer for the series with Reeves and The Batman producer Dylan Clark serving as executive producers alongside Farrell.

A lot of the progression of this series will be down to the audience reaction to Penguin in the film. If it does enter production, it’ll be the second series to do so as the streaming service has already ordered a drama series based on the Gotham Police Department in year one of The Dark Knight (The Batman is a year two story), with Joe Barton showrunning.

I’m hoping for one more prequel series focusing on Zoe Kravtiz’s Catwoman. I’m amazed that following the reaction to the actress in the latest trailer, Kravitz was either the star of it or in people’s top three favourite things.

There’s clear excitement at WarnerMedia and Warner Bros at the moment regarding The Batman and believe Reeves is onto a winner as the studio will want to continue expanding and create an interconnecting Batman universe.
