A New Superman is Coming To The Big Screen

Get ready to meet a new Superman on the way as Ta-Nehisi Coates writing the script with JJ Abrams producing.

Shadow and Act broke the story, revealing that the project is in the early development stage with no start production or release date set.

The website also got quotes from Coates, Abrams and Warner Bros Chairman Toby Emmerich.

“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros, DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor. I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of American’s most iconic mythic hero,” stated Coates.

Abrams added, “There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros for the opportunity.”

Shadow and Act are stating they haven’t heard news on a director, plot and that they’re on the search for an actor to play Kal-El/Superman.

However, Deadline reporting on the story added, “we’ve heard how Henry Cavill is eager to get back into the cape.”

Yet that might not happen as according to The Hollywood Reporter sources, “the project is being set up as a Black Superman story.” It’s something Michael B Jordan was trying to develop a couple of years ago to no success, but the studio could turn to the actor to star at the time.

If you’re thinking they’re race bending Clark Kent, they don’t need to, as black Superman already exists in the comics in the form of Earth 23’s Calvin Ellis.

Now the character has different origins and story. One includes Ellis being President Superman and has to battle an evil Superman. Still, I could see them keeping the classic Kal-El origin.

Basically, young Krypton scientists Jorel and Lara rocket their infant child, Kalel, to Earth and found by the poor but kind Ellis family and christened him Calvin.

Alternatively, they could go with Val-Zod. The son of General Zod and Ursa, but when the Krypton court executed them, he was adopted by Jor-El and Lara.

Just before Krypton’s destruction, Kal-El, his cousin Kara Zor-El and Val escape to Earth. During his trip, Val learned about his parents. Teaching him violence was the stupidest way to save his now destroyed planet, turning him into a pacifist.

Once on Earth, he becomes a recluse and an agoraphobic, preferring closed spaces. He becomes Superman after taking out an evil clone version of Kal-El.

Interestingly, this character is set in Earth-2. The same Earth DC Films chief Walter Hamada says is the home of Matt Reeves’ Batman, so could they be building a new cinematic universe.

I hope not and instead be close with newly cast Supergirl Sasha Calle, and be from the same Earth as her.

While I am excited to see what they do and if it is Calvin Ellis or Val-Zod, I can’t lie, I’m bummed out for Cavill because we’re nearly ten years to the release of Man of Steel and never got a solo sequel.

I would also be bummed because Man of Steel is why I like Superman, but maybe I just like this version of the classic character, which is why I’m interested in seeing what’s happens.

However, with the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League coming in three weeks, the British actor has got his trilogy, and with this door possibly closing, another could be opening in the form of a licence to kill, a tux and a code name of 007.
