Joker Leads With 11 Oscar Nominations

It’s a very good day at the Warner Bros studios as Joker leads the Oscar nominations (equalling BAFTA) with 11. While 1917, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and The Irishman received 10 nominations each.

Joker is included in three of the biggest categories: Best Film, Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and surprisingly Todd Phillips got the final spot in the Best Director. I say surprisingly as it was a three-way battle for the final spot with Gerta Gerwig and Taika Waititi for Little Women and Jojo Rabbit respectfully.

Away from the big Hollywood movies, it was a great day for Parasite picking up six nominations including Best Film and Best Director.

Elsewhere, in the acting categories, there were nominations for Antonio Banderas in Best Actor for Pain & Glory and Cynthia Erivo secured the Best Actress for her incredible performance in Harriet.

There were some big surprises from the get-go in Best Supporting Actress as the widely expected Hustlers star Jennifer Lopez missed out for Kathy Bates for her performance in Richard Jewell.

You could also make a case for Taron Egerton was snubbed in the Best Actor category having won the Golden Globe and nominated for both the Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA for his performance in Rocketman.

Furthermore, an equally big surprise omission was Frozen 2 not included in the Best Animated category to I Lost My Body, a Netflix movie that I feel no one has even heard of. Then there’s no International Feature Film nomination for French film Portrait Of A Lady On Fire.

On a personal note, I’m glad to see Joker got so many nominations and watching Twitter burn, then seeing parasite getting the love it deserves. Additionally, both Little Women stars Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh nab nominations.

On the other hand, I’m pretty pissed there wasn’t a Best Original Song for the incredible Wild Rose.

Here’s the full list of nominees with my winning picks in bold.
