Florence Pugh Could Be Joining Marvel’s Black Widow

It looks like Marvel Studio’s Black Widow is about to cast one of Britain’s most exciting upcoming actresses.

Variety has revealed Florence Pugh is in talks to the Scarlett Johansson standalone superhero film.

It looked like Pugh has been on the studio’s hot list for what the US trade is describing as the second lead role (so maybe the villain?) since last Autumn, but Marvel opened the door for other actresses at the beginning with Emma Watson once being rumoured and Justin Kroll also added in a tweet Pugh’s Little Women co-star Saoirse Ronan was in the running too.

However, Marvel went back to Pugh after she drew strong reviews for the wrestling comedy-drama Fighting With My Family. Hopefully, it wasn’t just that as she’s fantastic in her breakout role in Lady Macbeth, then you have The Little Drummer Boy and brought a strong performance in Netflix’s Outlaw King.

Aussie filmmaker Cate Shortland is on board to direct with Jac Schaeffer writing the screenplay with The Hollywood Reporter stating the project could begin in June in London.

The plot details are being kept tight like a KGB prison so it’s currently unknown if this is a prequel or set after Avengers: Endgame.

Pugh has got some noteworthy release coming up starring alongside Watson and Ronan in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women with a cast that also includes Meryl Streep and Timothée Chalamet. The 23-year-old actress leads the much anticipated follow up from Hereditary director Ari Aster, Midsommar.

This is great casting by Marvel and now this film has given me a reason to see it because I believe Pugh, alongside Jessie Buckley, is one of the best stars coming out of the UK.

Are you looking forward to seeing Black Widow finally getting her own solo film? Would you like this to be a prequel or set after Avengers? Let me know in the comments below.
